How to avoid the stress of hiring a new employee

Employing someone to fill a much-needed gap in your business can be exciting and daunting at the same time.

In many situations, managers are already under the pump because their team is potentially understaffed – hence the need to bring someone new in.

Adding to this, is the time required to undertake the recruitment process and the fact that many businesses lack the specific skills, planning methods and tools to effectively hire new employees.

The final challenge can occur when a business hires the wrong person, leaving them back at the starting line.

In total, there are about 15-steps to bring a new employee onboard. From creating the job description to advertising, applicant screenings, background checks, interviews and reference checks.

If you would like to tackle the task yourself here are a few tips:

Be a project manager

Set up the task as a project, not another job to squeeze into your day.

Be open and transparent

Be clear and direct with candidates and make sure you follow up. You don’t want to waste their time any more than your own. If you handle the process poorly, you run the risk of tarnishing your business reputation in the eyes of potential employees.

Ask for help

Sometimes you just can’t do everything on your own. While you might want to take the lead, look for ways in which to share the responsibility. You need to feel confident about your decisions, so peer or professional support can provide this.
