How to deal with the job search blues

Looking for a new job can be stressful both mentally and financially. And if it takes some time to find the right one, can negatively impact your self-esteem.

Unfortunately, the solution isn’t always sending out more resumes. Dealing with adversity requires fresh thinking because if your emotional health suffers, you’ll find it much harder to find the right job.

We often get too wrapped up in our work, so it’s important to remember we are much more than our employment status. We are made up of our unique experiences, interests and values.

Develop a routine

The stress of finding a job can make you feel like you don’t deserve any downtime, so develop a good routine e.g. set work hours and have a mandatory lunch break. Give yourself space to focus on other things so that you can mentally recharge.

Get some wins on the board

Send out a number of resumes, or simply accomplish something unrelated, like cleaning your home workspace. If you complete a task, you’ll feel like you have achieved something and feel better about yourself.

Learn something new

If you’ve exhausted the day’s job search possibilities, look at your free time as a bonus. Learn something new. Take advantage of any free online learning, or explore a hobby you’ve always wanted to try.

Keep social

One of the best ways to reaffirm your identity, away from your job search, is to spend time with your family and friends. Socialising when your stressed might not always be easy, but combating the isolation you may feel will keep you moving forward.

And remember, being out of work happens to the best of us, so you’re not alone.
